Room Re-design Tips
Room Re-design Quick Tips
If you are planning to re-design or re-purpose a room in your home, this blog offers some advice on how to handle the process with ease.
Everyone has that room that they don’t know what to do with; maybe it’s a spare bedroom, or just an awkward shaped room. What is the room being used for? What do you want it to be used for?
Purpose. That is the most important question to answer before you start any design project.
Step one: Clear the room out completely - furniture, rugs, knick-knacks, etc. Use this opportunity to reduce clutter. If you are storing items in this room whose use occurs in a different room, say, a stack of dishes found in an office closet, move those items to the room they will actually be used in. If you find yourself re-discovering items you forgot that you owned, but don’t use, consider re-locating them to the appropriate room, or donating them to a local charity or shelter. Use a couple plastic bins to designate what stays and what goes.
Now that you have a blank canvas of a room with no distractions, you will be able to think more creatively about the space.
Step two: Once your room is cleaned out, you should ask yourself that question of purpose again. If you need a little inspiration, spend an hour or two perusing the wonderful world of Pinterest and Houzz. Sites like these have thousands of pictures that you can save as inspiration. Once you find a few you love, print those pictures out. Tape them up on the wall in your empty room to see if you can envision those ideas in the space. It may sound silly, but creating a quick photo collage will help you to stay focused on one theme. Take a walk around your entire home to remind yourself of current colors and design styles you already have and love. Stay on a similar route in your re-designed room to create a cohesive feel. Designers use ‘mood boards’ to assist in keeping a consistent theme throughout a home. A mood board is simply a collection of color and texture (fabric) samples. There are a lot of great guides on the Internet to reference if you need help.
Step three: Set up your new space. Start moving back in any currently owned items that match your new design purpose; then the fun part, shop for any missing pieces. Woohoo! Just a quick note of caution - when in doubt, stay neutral!
Although it can be tempting to make that splurge purchase on a trendy light fixture or chair in your favorite bright color, I would recommend choosing timeless over trendy. My biggest piece of advice is to choose neutral colors on staple items in your home that are more difficult and more costly to change (large furniture, wall color, drapery, and fixtures). You can then add personal touches of fun patterns and colors on smaller items, such as pillows. The more un-interesting the background is (wall color), the more your colorful pillows will stand out. You will also get more compliments on how trendy you are when you easily swap out pillows and small décor from season to season.
