Kitchen Reno Budgeting Tips

Kitchen Renovation Budget Planning

According to HomeAdvisor, the average cost to completely renovate a kitchen in the Boston area is around $25,000.  Of course, depending on the size of your kitchen, extensiveness of the remodel, and the materials you use, the cost is quite a large variable.

When you are trying to get a rough estimate of what your budget should be, consider whether the layout of cabinets and appliances will be changing, or are you simply updating some pieces? This will have a great effect on the cost, if you start rearranging plumbing and electrical locations. You are adding the cost of drawing up a new floor plan from an architect or interior designer, as well as needing to obtain approval from your town’s inspectional service department for any movement of electrical or plumbing.

Now let’s count the number of boxes (cabinets) you will need/want.  If you are picking from the pre-stocked selection of cabinets in your local hardware store, the cost can run from around $100-$400 per box.  Keep in mind they will have limited style and color options. This may be a good fit if you are furnishing a rental property or kitchen that gets very limited use.  Most homeowners go with a semi-custom cabinetry, which you can order at the hardware store, but will need to compile a list to specify each box with size, design, color, and any special features such as slide out shelves. They will have style and color samples in the store to view.

Next, consider countertop material options.  There are numerous options for materials, including granite, marble, tile, laminate, wood, concrete, recycled glass, etc. I would suggest looking at samples in person if possible. Or ask your design consultant or contractor their opinion. They will likely be familiar with the benefits of each. You should allocate about 10% of the budget toward countertops.

Appliances are another large chunk of the overall budget. If you plan on keeping your existing pieces, you’re golden. If not, do your homework. Shop around at a few stores if you can, and try and bundle the sale to get the best discount.

Lastly, set aside about 10% of your budget for things like light fixtures, backsplash, faucets, and cabinetry handles.  These are the final touches that really transform a kitchen into your kitchen. Again, shop around for the best deals, especially if you’re shopping online. There are an endless number of websites to browse, and this can be overwhelming to research. Create a list of bookmarked pages for options you want to re-visit. Go to the store to test the look and feel of any products you are unsure of.  Even better, ask your friends and family what brands and products they have and love. Scope out the faucets and lighting in their homes. Pick accessories that you love! The kitchen is typically the heart of the home, so if you’re going to be spending most of your time in this space, make sure you love it!
